Ascensive
china painted porcelain, copper, wood, $2800, 16"x14"x6"
Where do we go before life and do we even truly die?
My own personal journey is a path much taken with contemplations on spirit and soul.
Anyone who has had an out of body experience may say 'what am I?' Who left and who' stayed' within my body?!'. Is this proof of eternal continuance?.... can we surmise that a body ridden by a spritual self could be like a garment and life doesn't end after the physical dies?
When I prepared for The Ribbon show I was so excited to be included and to join other artists in the visual exploration of these ideas.
I began to think about what piece could be representative of the theme of rebirth and the cycle/ infinity of life.I was already immersed in bird and flower imagery in my studio of late, I knew both were beautiful images for life and death themes. Each new artwork was being framed by intentional portal shapes. Circles and archways clutter the workspace.
Birds have been seen as carriers of the soul between worlds for centuries.
Some cultures perceive this a bridging of our earthly state and the sky. Aw! The freedom of flight. When I see a falcon soaring over my land it appears to me as focused, willful, and fierce; and I often feel this is what is needed for my own life. In Ascensive, the falcon is surrounded by flowers, so transitory and ethereal returning year after year in brighter numbers and size. In the outer ring a black foliage of ivy and acanthus leaves, eternal love and diligent/ noble works hold it all togther. That which is not seen by most, the unseen, the dark worlds can still expand... still be discovered.
The sword? In life we can use a symbolic or literal weapon on others, but perhaps that projection
onto our own reflections has been misplaced. I look into the eyes of another, or an animal or a plant and I see intimate connection. Could it be we are meant to conquer ourselves, maybe even our unseen self not the world's? Certainly a cycle of life in continual renewing would give all things the time and space to discover,
evolve and ascend.
Life goes on, literally or in a way we have yet to explore.
Below are pictures of the opening reception night for The Ribbon celebrating the Gallerist Susannah Kelly at Antler Gallery.
