New insect sculptures for 2024
INSECTUM
This year I am immersed in flowers, insects and birds. The studio is ready but abandoned and though the ideas are flowing...it has to wait. First I have to install a bath after waiting 13 years! and a new floor and more.... After days of remodeling I take breaks in the studio. What is on the desk is my ongoing series of porcelain insects. They are sculpted in porcelain and painted in fine pigments which are fired into the sculpture for permanence. For those of you also in love with this miniature world of creatures, you see too the amazing patterns, fantastic shapes and essentialness of insecti. New pieces will arrive at Childhood End Gallery in.....NOVEMBER |

Childhood's End Gallery
OPENING NIGHT, OCTOBER 6th, ARTWALK
My new series of work, OSCINES- the Bird Sculptures are exhibiting Oct 6, 2023 in downtown Olympia for artwalk.
Childhood's End is featuring a group show of 7 artists who will be showing crows and ravens, These are some of our favorite birds! They fascinate us with their high intelligence, ability to sing and speak, and great family stick togetherness!
Emerging from my own studio are large full size Raven & Crow sculptures. With the Sanctum show this year I had little time to make more than 3-4 raven and crow sculptures, but more are on their way next year. I will also be preparing many small oscine (singing) birds for the gift gallery.
Each piece is sculpted with botanical plants or flowers. They are chosen for their essence, associations and symbology. Using floriography there is a bit of hidden meaning in each bird piece.
Ravens and crows often symbolize death or change and with the recent deaths of my grandparents- who I cared for for 7 years-it seemed appropriate to attriubute some of the symbology to the feelings and experiences I had with them.
Ravens: death, change, wisdom, intelligence
Berries: Growth, prosperity, reaching for, fertility
Moths: Psychic, nighttime, transformation, magic
Bees: abundance, hard working, brightness, feminine energy

Spring Mushroom Ornaments & figurines
Childhood's End Gallery, Olympia, WA
Childhood's End Gallery, Olympia, WA
Mushroom Ornaments sold well last year so I made another batch!
Childhood's End gallery in Olympia, WA has amazing gifts and a white wall gallery space as well.
The mushroom ornaments and figurines are in stock now. There are Chanterelles, Morels, Aminitas and turkey tail imitators....real and imaginary mushrooms.
Each Shroom is handsculpted individually of locally made porcelain. After the biscuit fire (I prefer to paint on the extra matte surface of a high fire without glazes) they are hand painted in layers with quality pigments and essential oil carriers.
1/2 inch to 4 inches....$15-52.00
Raven & Crow (& Owls?) Sculptures- Fall, 2023

Fall 2023
Ideas- to sketch book- to sculpture....
I am excited to participate in a group show at Childhood's End gallery for Fall 2023. The show will feature ravens and crows.
My home is flown over almost every day by a family of ravens. I love them, but I also love our resident owls! Owls like pygmies and saw-whets. Great horned owls call to their mates in the forest surrounding my home. It's wishful thinking that I could sneak some into the corvid show...maybe I can slip them into the gift shop!
In the studio I am testing several clay bodies. Among them are black porcelains and sculpture clays. I prefer porcelain, but it has some limitations to size as its shrink rate is high. In order to make it work the walls of sculptures have to be even and thin. Sculpture bodies will enable me to make bigger works without as much risk of cracking but that same grittiness that allows more flexability in size makes the final piece much less smooth.
This week I am warming up for that fall show with forest wrens and hummingbird sculptures...you will love them! Dates and finished works pics coming later....

My fuzzy Bumbles are 45-75$ and are made of porcelain coverred in faux fur and copper wings with transparent clay.
Selling fast! so come down to Childhood's End Gallery to buy your own.
February, 1, 2023 UPDATE: plenty of bumbles are still available, some even carry little honey pots. Very unique and difficult to make.

'BLOOM', June 15- July 31, 2022
Childhood End Gallery, Olympia, WA
2023 UPDATE: many sculptures from the Wild Orchid Series sold at the gallery last year. You can see available works at Childhood's End Gallery or on their website.
Its Springtime! and My studio is bursting with exotic orchids and our beautiful Native Northwest orchids in porcelain and copper! These works are a lot of fun to make but very labor intensive. There are over 50 blooms and around 200 components made so far.
My orchids will be participating in Childhood End Gallery own celebration of flowers. The gallerie's exhibit "BLOOM" is open June 17th and runs over a month. It will be a beautiful show worth seeing in Downtown Olympia, WA. Many lovely flower paintings are offered and an installation made by community participants/orchestrated by Kathy Gore Fuss will be on display.
Featured in my work are exquisite Washington orchids like the Fairy Slipper orchid (pic on bottom left) and the elusive coralroots. I will keep my website updated with stories of their progress at the studio stories page. Or click on blue text and read: Stalking the Wild Orchids...

Ghost Gallery, Seattle, WA
Crystals and wildflowers inhabit this mini series for spring 2022.
They make me imagine walking on a mountain path and finding an amazing geode just lying there unavoidable in its ability to mesmerize. Tiny wildflowers emerge from and around the stones.
In these works I wanted to express both my continued adoration of nature.
It was odd to me to create geodes from porcelain...I mean why bother? There are so many splendid samples out there to find or buy, but the practice was rewarding in its focus and result.

NOW SHOWING At Ghost Gallery in Seattle, JULY AND AUGUST 2021: UPDATE: SOLD OUT
New Handformed tile with painted garden underworld scenes are featured in the Mini show now at www.ghostgalleryshop.com.
Having really enjoyed the scale of small tile paintings, I found my own hand- formed tiles even more conductive to china paints. Rustic, with surface cracks and imperfections, the paintings could be from another age.
You don't have to be a biologist or naturalist to obsess with the wilds. If you have ever crawled through your garden or a forest, its miniature dwellers and plant life are fascinating and worthy of investigation to those who love nature.
These works are extra small at 1-2 inches. They come with their own gold painted hand made stands. (and they are super affordable!!) They can also be hung from an embedded wire in back. $45-80

VERA FLOS (Wildflowers)
Botanical Sculptures showing at Ghost gallery 2021 thru 2022
Minute flowers emerge from their own 'sottobosco' a rocky underworld of insect life and mushrooms. Each piece suggests the drama and beauty of nature. They harken to an earlier era that was fascinated with constant discovery of the botanical world.
Sculpted from porcelain and copper these works are precious jewels made by a skilled local artist.
Five works are showing at Ghost Gallery for the month of June and beyond. New works will be added throughout the summer including a series of wildflowers growing out of geodes.
Come see the works at Ghost Gallery or go to my 'Vera Flos' page to read more and see the works. New pieces will be added later in the year.

Though Food Art Collection Gallery in Seattle in usually exhibiting fabulous food -art related works, the owner Jeremy also has a love for the luscious artwork of the Dutch masters. Last year He invited me to show at his annual Dutch Masters' Exhibit.
Jeremy is hosting his annual Dutch Masters show at Food Art Collection Gallery this year, Starting in June.
The five works in his show are a celebration of a beautiful flower that heralds the end of winter and welcomes a new spring. Each tulip emerges from a base of rock, earth, fungus, animal and insect life. Crafted of porcelain and copper these works are detailed and original but reminiscent of vintage works from bygone eras.

NO KILL WINGED INSECTS
Did you know that our species has been responsible for affecting or decimating the genesis of almost all other species of our planet? ....of course you do. But did you know scientists are reporting up to 60% of all animal and insect life is gone in just the last 80 years. To celebrate insect life and maybe bring attention to their spectacular variety and importance...I have made a new creative insect series. Fresh out of the imagination comes a new series of small works I call No Kill butterflies, Moths, cicadas, and mantids. Mounted in simple handmade wooden boxes, the winged insects glow with color. They look like the real thing but are more sturdy in their porcelain mimicry. AND bonus! they weren't killed to be mounted and sold as tourist gifts. Skillfully handsculpted and painted, they are made with real attention to detail. The boxes are painted with 4 coats of archival paint and finished with uv/dust prohibitive sealant. In late December additional insect 'No Kills' will be mounted with their pupae and caterpillars. I also have gorgeous oleander moths, exotic tiger moths, and Cicadas arriving soon (see samples to right). $100-400.00 If your organization contributes to the survival of these creatures please feel free to contact me for donations to fundraising auctions. click here to go to CONTACT |
MUSHROOM ORNAMENTS/ TALISMENS Mushrooms are famous in the Northwest and loved all over the world for their fascinating shapes, colors and taste. These lovely mushrooms were so much fun to make. They are both fantastical and realistic. Thrown into the mix are some acorns, cicada pupae and wasps. Tiny 1/2 inch to 3 inches long, they come in many colors and sizes. Price Range: $12-58.00 |

After moving into my new studio there was just a few weeks before the Pandemic arrived. The additional isolation, the beauty of a clean new space and the currents of creativity and intuitive thought began to produce new images. An exploration of blooms emerging out of the death/renewal of a threatening base. This space of mind reflects my thoughts on the world, its imbalances and the resulting solution/evolutions of nature....a force far beyond our minute tyranny. Complex as the new ideas were to produce they stretched all my skills.
Orchids are iconic in the modern world. Found in nearly every grocery store and many peoples homes; they are both common and exotic. In the wilds, orchids change to adapt, using scents and mimicry to reproduce and pollinate. They grow in harsh environments often without the soil or the nutrients other plants rely on. They are masters of evolving to fit their environments.
I am fascinated by the miniature world of the orchid and its pollinators, the mycelium, and the creatures at its base and in the air that are so necessary for life.
Many of the orchid sculptures are rooted in their own forest floor, alive with mushrooms, snakes and mosses and the struggles of predator and prey. A porcelain moment capturing the drama in the natural world.
Throughout 2019 and 2020 I made paintings that were simple studies of such master painters as Rachel Ruysch and Otto Marseus. I lived those images of flowers in the garden, insect life and forest trails when staying at home for four months.
I don't use social media, but I imagine many of us grew closer to the simplicity of what life can and is; the importance of the natural world and its checks and balances; and that which we take for granted.
One can see a few teaser orchid sculptures showing at Splash Gallery/Olympia, WA. But visit GHOST GALLERY in Seattle Wa for entire show works.

'Nature Continued On'
Postcard Show at the Kenneth j Minnaert Center for the Arts at SPSCC
Jan 1-Feb 2. 2019
SPSCC, South Puget Sound Community College in Tumwater, WA, has a lovely gallery on campus called Kenneth J Minnaert Center for the Arts. Every Year they sponsor a fundraiser event called the Postcard Show. Last year was my first year donating and I had a great time making a piece for it. Its held Jan 1-Feb 2. 2019 and don't miss the final night of the Auction! Things can get heated over a few most publicly favored of the works, and you can get a nice small work for a very affordable price. My last piece a octopus tending to her young eggs went for over 75$. This year I will be donating the piece below, I call it " nature continued on". Its 4x6 and is constructed of patinaed copper and china painted porcelain.

In the past 6 months I have designing, building, sculpting,sewing....all for the launch of my new line of work called Forest Spirits.
It doesn't mean I wont be making big sculptures woven together of copper, porcelain and wood....it just means I needed a little tiny fairy break!
On October 2nd 11-6, I will be at Splash Gallery showing my new work in a casual launch. Come see the fairies, gnomes, songbirds and more! I will be featuring a big piece that was commisioned by my neighbor. Its a dogwood branch with fairies on it! almost 3 feet long it features a copper branch with handmade leaves. It has sculpted dogwood flowers with china painted details. two fairies cavort in its blooms! Come see, enjoy and collect! For those who come down you will receive a small fairy token. Click on Splash Gallery to get directions to location.
Bring on the FAIRIES!!!
Living in the woods is the perfect place to experience fairies! And in my studio they are taking over with their quaint bodies and ethereal energies. I have been working long and hard to get a little menagerie of fae folk down to Splash for showing. Maybe because they are so cute is the reason I have delayed so long. Sometime in late August or September will be exhibiting some of the new dolls and fairies.
Many of them have already sold, and they do take quite a bit of work to prepare. I have been china painting on a beautiful new porcelain called New Zealand from Clay art center. For their flowing locks- you can brush and play with-I use about 15 different hair wefts. Recently I helped a friend shear her alpacas and the new fairies/gnomes feature the amazing variety in wool they had to offer. It takes about an hour to wash tiny swatches of the hair and then I carefully make hair wefts to be ready for use (like a ready made palette) for the dolls and fairies.
See my blog page for more details. They range in price from $45-500.00. The big vine fairy will be the featured guest! (pics coming soon)

NEW! 'ANIMAL FRIENDS"
Collectable series
My new animal Friends series of collectable figurines is coming soon. THEY ARE IN COLOR!!!! Yes my new works will have color in them. Its been fun doing the black and whites but now its time to add color.
Made in two kinds of Clayart porcelains they shine with cuteness! I china paint the little critters in warm inviting colors and accessorize with chrystals, ribbons and more -in some of the designs.
Soon many other series will be hand painted in china paints as well. The painting is done with fancy french china pigments and fired into the ceramic figures. BUT unlike many other makers of porcelain, these are EACH hand made in the united states, painted by hand and made in small batches. Each one is truly unique and well loved. Still working out the china painting kinks, but so fun to make! COMING SOON!
